Peter Forsberg gamble is nothing to lose for Avalanche

By: Marty Henwood 129 days 18 hours 19 minutes ago.

Hands up those of you who placed a little wager on how long Peter Forsberg would last in the Colorado Avalanche lineup.

Psst. Hope you took the under. If you doubled down and took "groin", congratulations. You just hit the parlay.

For those keeping score at home, three games. That's all it took for Forsberg to suffer a groin injury that has him listed as day-to-day.

If you didn't see this one coming, go to the front of the class, prop up on a chair and put on the dunce cap.

Now I should be the last one giving Forsberg advice, but if he is looking for a new career after hockey - and that may be measured in hours and not months - a doctor seems as logical a choice as any. I mean, he is an x-ray with legs. With the insight Forsberg has on the human body, he can probably breeze through his schooling in about six weeks and have his own practice by August.

Personally, I think Forsberg is waging a war he cannot win and I was of the opinion that the on-again, off-again drama of Forsberg's return was a fizzled manuscript of Danielle Steele's that never made it to the publisher's desk.

Bashing Forsberg seems to be the "in" thing to do, but the Avalanche cannot lose by rolling the dice with him. Nothing to lose, a lot to gain, or so they say.

Colorado didn't give anything up. Forsberg is not a problem child in the dressing room and can still play at a high, if not awe-inspiring, level.

And yes, if he can stay healthy, Forsberg could make the difference. OK, that is like saying Milli Vanilli can take home an Oscar if they took singing lessons, but let's not split hairs.

On Saturday, Forsberg showed flashes of his former self, racking up a pair of assists, his first points since making his much-heralded return to the NHL.

The injury, of course, could have been predicted. It's tough to be out of the game as long as Forsberg was and step right in with the best players on the planet.

First it was the groin. Next week, it could be the ankle, back, pinkie or any other part of the anatomy. With Forsberg, it is to be expected. You take it for what it is and cross your fingers.

Losing Forsberg for any period of time is pretty much gospel.

But for the Avalanche, there is nothing to lose with this gamble.

In fact, they may roll snake eyes yet.
