Sometimes it took a highlight-reel goal, while at other times a bad bounce or fluke shot put an end to a marathon NHL overtime game. One thing is for sure: all were memorable.
That pretty much sums up many of the overtime goals you'll find in this video montage featuring the top ten longest games in NHL history (post-expansion).
Hot on the heels of Brenden Morrow's goal in the fourth overtime that put the Sharks out of this year's playoffs and vaulted Dallas into the Western final against Detroit we've got nine more for you. For those counting, Morrow's marker that ended their series with San Jose was the fifth-longest game on this list.
Watch the video - you'll likely notice that the Stars were involved in exactly half of those games. Why they don't like to finish it off in the first 60 is beyond me, but they've won three of the five, so they're likely not complaining.
There are some pretty impressive names scoring those winners: Brett Hull, Joe Nieuwendyk, Pat Lafontaine, Petr Nedved and Keith Primeau, just to name a few.
Oh, and the longest game in post-expansion that came out in the #1 spot? None other than an epic battle between this year's Eastern Conference finalists - the Flyers and Pens. The game ended midway through the fifth overtime on May 6, 2000. I won't spoil it for you - you'll have to see who won the game that many thought would never end.
So if you're a fan for the dramatic, you're in luck here. This list showcases some of the best overtime memories ever.
